The Writing of Cogito: An Hypothesis About Samuel Beckett

Abstract

This paper proposes the hypothesis that it’s possible to recognize the figure of the Cartesian cogito in Samuel Beckett’s narrative. Especially in relation to the problem of the separation between mind and body, and the paradoxes resulting from a philosophical self-reflexivity whose operations seem to describe biographical events. The subject who meditates withdraws from the world, speaking and writing, accompanied only by his own voice.
