The critical discourse analysis of a newspaper text shows how the symbolic elites in Chile perform an underlying discrimination against the mapuches by means of its institutional discourse practices. This is shown in its style which makes use of discourse strategies such as intertextuality, the illusion of ca- sual conversation to narrow the gap between institutional discourse and the reader, and the strategy of personalization.)
